MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) – Bayern Munich sent a message to the rest of the Bundesliga that the treble winners are in excellent shape, coach Hansi Flick said on Friday following an 8-0 demolition of Schalke 04 in their first game of the season.

Bayern began their league campaign with a bang as they scored three times in the 31st minute to end the game with their impressive pace and lethal finish.

“It was great of us. Before the game we wanted this to be a game that defines where we are at this stage and my players did very well,” said Flick.

“We wanted to show that this season we are here again.”

However, Flick was quick to point out that it was just one game in a long and busy season to come.

“We just had the first game. Let’s go slowly here. But it was important to show that we are on the right track.”

It was a record win for a Bundesliga opener and came less than a month after Bayern clinched the Champions League title to complete the treble. He has won the last eight German league titles in a row.

“Bayern were in sensationally good shape,” said Schalke coach David Wagner, whose team have failed to win any of their last 17 league games.

“At the moment Bayern are probably the strongest team in the world. They proved it today.

“We didn’t play well at all. Now we have to shake off and show a reaction (next week).
