GEORGE TOWN: Six more inmates in Penang Pretrial Detention tested positive for Covid-19.

The Director General of the Department of Prisons, Datuk Seri Zulkifli Omar, said that six more cases had been reported, bringing the total to seven cases as of Tuesday (October 6).

“The number of positive Covid-19 cases in prisons across the country is now 1,126 as of Tuesday.

“The spread among detainees started in Tawau Prison when a Lahad Datu inmate tested positive for Covid-19 on September 2.

“The following group was detected in Alor Setar prison on September 29,” it said in a statement.

The government has placed Alor Setar prison under an enhanced movement control (MCO) order for 14 days following an increase in Covid-19 infections there.

Zulkifli said the department will follow the current standard operating procedure established by the Health Ministry, which includes treating, quarantining and slowing the spread of the virus related to its staff and protecting inmates across the country.
