Singapore wants to have an air travel bubble with Malaysia

Singapore’s Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung said he will propose an air transport bubble deal with Malaysia when the number of Covid-19 cases decreases.

SINGAPORE: Singapore, which recently reached an agreement in principle to establish a bilateral air travel bubble with Hong Kong, wants to have a similar agreement with Malaysia when the time is right, according to the republic’s Minister of Transportation Ong Ye Kung.

“I would really like to have an air (travel) bubble (arrangement) with Malaysia,” he said yesterday in an exclusive interview with The Straits Times.

“But as of now, the number of cases (Covid-19) in Malaysia is quite high. So, I think we will have to wait and see… We know that Malaysia takes virus control very seriously. So I certainly hope they succeed in suppressing this current round of spikes (in the cases of Covid-19).

“When the time is right, I’m sure I will propose (a bubble fix for air travel) to them,” Ong said, as quoted.

The minister responded to a question about whether there were more travel plans between Singapore and Malaysia, one of the busiest air routes in the region.

The two countries have implemented two travel arrangements so far, namely the Reciprocal Green Lane (RGL) and the Periodic Commuting Arrangement (PCA).
