PETALING JAYA: Singapore authorities ordered a recall of imported bottled drinking water from Malaysia after it was found to be contaminated with a bacteria generally found in faeces, soil, water and sewage.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said it detected the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa in bottled “Meadows” water in a routine test of the product. The bacteria are known to cause blood infections and pneumonia among humans, as well as causing disease in plants and animals.

The statement from Singapore said Cold Storage Singapore Pte Ltd, the importer of the bottled water, completed the recall of the product.

“Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common environmental bacteria and can be found in feces, soil, water, and sewage. It can multiply in aquatic environments and on the surface of suitable organic materials in contact with water.

“Consuming products contaminated with pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause a variety of infections, but it rarely causes serious illness in healthy people,” he said.

The SFA also advised those who have consumed the product to seek medical advice, adding that customers can seek refunds at the point of purchase.
