JOHOR BARU: A 43-year-old Singaporean factory manager was fined 10,000 ringgit and two weeks in jail in the Session Court here after admitting to bribing an immigration officer.
Yong Boon Tao pleaded guilty to an alternative charge under Section 214 of the Penal Code after a court translator read the charges in Mandarin before Judge Kamarudin Kamsun on Wednesday (October 28).
According to the charge sheets, Yong had given a bribe of RM 100 to an immigration officer in Bangunan Sultan Iskandar around 9.40am on Saturday (October 24).
He added that he did so in an attempt to prevent action from being taken against him for violating Reciprocal Green Lane (RGL) regulations, where he could be given a ‘Do Not Land’ (NTL) notice preventing him from entering the country.
He was represented by lawyer Hazza Khalid while the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecutor, Mahirah Mohd Pauzi, prosecuted the case.
Yong paid the fines.
It was previously reported that a Singaporean man was placed in pre-trial detention for five days for allegedly bribing a Malaysian immigration officer to allow him to enter Malaysia through the RGL without going through a 14-day quarantine.
