SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines will prioritize cargo capacity for shipping Covid-19 vaccines and will soon conduct test flights to test the process, the Straits Times reported, citing a company statement and comments from an executive.
Cargo space will be available to prioritize vaccine shipments through key trade routes, according to the report. Boeing Co 747-400 freighters, as well as passenger jets, will be deployed to increase capacity where needed, he said.
The Business Times reported that the airline has seven Boeing 747-400 freighters ready to transport the coronavirus vaccines, while its fleet of airliners is also ready to be deployed to increase capacity.
The carrier is in talks with some of the vaccine manufacturers and is working on the details of the planned tests, according to the Straits Times report, which quotes Chin Yau Seng, senior vice president of cargo.
Although airlines have been affected by the pandemic due to the collapse of passenger demand, companies will be the workhorses of the bet to eradicate it by transporting billions of vials.
The International Air Transport Association has described the operation as “the most complex logistics exercise ever conducted.”
