PUTRAJAYA: Corruption and abuse of power among the country’s public servants is like cancer, which is feared will slowly damage the governmental institution.

According to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) statistics for 2015 as of October this year, a total of 2,607 officials were arrested for corrupt practices.

MACC (Prevention) Deputy Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Shamshun Baharin Mohd Jamil said the highest arrest involved members of the implementing group, with 1,884 people, followed by management and professional groups, with a total of 658 people.

“The senior management group registered 65 people. We do not want a situation, because of these people, it will hamper the good development of the country and tarnish the credibility of the officials.

“Therefore, the efforts to address and ensure that the country, especially the public administration, is free of corruption, are of shared responsibility and do not fall only on the shoulders of the MACC,” he told Bernama in an exclusive interview at the office. from MACC here recently.

Shamshun Baharin said that in conjunction with today’s International Anti-Corruption Day, the MACC will focus on local government authorities (PBT) with the theme “PBT against bribery.”

He said that local authorities are one of the focuses of the National Anticorruption Plan (NACP) and the commission is prepared to work together to help local authorities tackle corruption and abuse of power, as well as other bad practices, to transform in an organization with high integrity and free from corruption.

“There are many problems in PBT, not only corruption, but also service problems,” he added.

It also suggested that local authorities develop their own Organizational Anti-Corruption Plan (OACP) to combat corruption in a comprehensive manner, thus showing the commitment of all its employees in the fight against corruption.

He said the Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) was one of the first of 149 local authorities in Malaysia to develop the plan.

This reflects the commitment and support of MPT staff in the fight against corruption, and further inspired the MACC to continue fighting corruption and abuse of power, he added.

“We are ready to assist other local authorities in the preparation of the OACP by providing advice and working with the officials involved,” he said.-Called
