PETALING JAYA: A PKR supporter has told Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to first show that he has Dewan Rakyat’s support if he wants MPs to evaluate the national budget on merit.
Speaking to the FMT, Hassan Karim, the MP for Pasir Gudang, said that the question of the opposition using the budget vote to overthrow the government would not arise if Muhyiddin had resolved questions about the support he enjoyed in Parliament.
Yesterday, Muhyiddin, who is president of PPBM, said there was no need for anyone to reject the budget to force a general election, and that he also wanted new polls once the Covid-19 pandemic situation improves.
Hassan says opposition MPs don’t want to stake the budget to determine whether Muhyiddin has majority support or not.
“But Muhyiddin first has to resolve the issue of the vote of no confidence against him. If you don’t want a vote of no confidence, then you have to go for a vote of confidence. “
While agreeing that the budget should be evaluated on merit, Hassan said the process is constrained by Muhyiddin’s refusal to demonstrate his majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.
“If Muhyiddin does not respect the vote of no confidence, Pakatan Harapan has no other option. So the budget vote becomes an objective way of determining whether Muhyiddin is supported or not, whether the government is legal or not. “
He added that it was not too late for Muhyiddin to push a confidence motion for his government before the third reading of the budget.
Muhyiddin, he said, should not bet his support for the budget, saying it was “irresponsible.”
Hassan also said that Muhyiddin’s claim that the elections would be held after the Covid-19 situation improves is an attempt to avoid the fundamental question of whether he now has the support of all MPs.
Meanwhile, Amanah communications director Khalid Samad has expressed doubts that Muhyiddin really wants new elections.
He said he believes Muhyiddin will only ask for quick polls if he is afraid of being ousted for treason.
