KOTA KINABALU: Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) said today that the decision of the Warisan-led government to proceed with the RM3 billion Paper Dam project is proof that the party was incompetent to govern as it did not care about the people of Sabah.

PCS President Anifah Aman said Warisan had shown her true colors by ignoring objections from Sabahans and NGOs.

“The Sabahans must wake up. The Warisan-led government has lied to us on this issue.

“A government that does not listen to the people is not a government for the people and by the people. They must never return to power. It’s dangerous, ”he said in a statement.

The Papar Dam, formerly known as the Kaiduan Dam, was supposed to be built to end the acute water shortage on the west coast of Sabah by 2024. It will have the capacity to produce 1 billion liters per day.

Warisan had previously protested against the project when it was under the government led by Barisan Nasional.

However, Acting Chief Minister Shafie Apdal said recently that the project will continue to ensure that the water problems facing the district and surrounding areas, including the state capital, can be resolved.

He said that although some communities were against the initiative, the state government must consider the general needs of people who require clean water supply at all times.

Anifah said that by comparison, a PCS-led government would explore more sustainable alternatives to the Papar dam problem while remaining transparent.

“We believe there are alternatives and we will explore the best possible ones that would benefit communities and the environment in the long term. We will not take shortcuts.

“We are a government that listens and will always listen to the people first. We won’t just sweep our way like Warisan Plus.

“We will hear from the experts and the communities who will see their traditional lands underwater if the dam project goes ahead,” he said.
