JOHOR BARU: A dependent was fined nearly RM37,000 and sentenced to nine years in jail after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and causing the death of a police officer.
The defendant, 25-year-old Mohamad Shafiq Lokman, pleaded guilty to four counts before Magistrates Mohd Zaki Abd Rahman and Nurasidah A. Rahman in two separate courts here on Sunday (November 8).
In the first court, Mohamad Shafiq was charged under section 41 (1) of the 1987 Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless driving and section 26 (1) of the same law for driving without a license.
Mohd Zaki sentenced him to eight years in prison and fined him 30,000 ringgit, with a default of 12 months in prison, in addition to having his license revoked for five years for the first offense.
He also fined the defendant 1,800 ringgit, in the absence of three months in prison, for the second offense.
Meanwhile, in the second court, Mohamad Shafiq was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public official in the performance of his duties and Section 15 (1) (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1952 for testing positive for amphetamines and methamphetamines. .
Nurasidah sentenced him to 12 months in prison and fined him 5,000 ringgit, failing which five months in prison for the third offense and eight months in prison for the fourth offense.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Prosecutor Tengku Amir Zaki Tengku Abdul Rahman while the defendant was not represented.
The phrases will run consecutively.
