SEPANG: Maqasid syariah or goals of syariah are the guiding principles behind many of the government’s efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, says the Prime Minister.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that although they did not become slogans, the principles calling for the protection of religion, life, mind, property and generation were the basis of the administration’s initiatives.
“To protect lives, which is one of the principles of maqasid syariah, the government has enforced various phases of the movement control order (MCO).
“As a government, it is our duty to stop the spread of the dangerous virus, and that is why we enforced the MCO,” he said at the launch of the Nusantara syariah legal and judicial conference on Tuesday (September 29).
Muhyiddin noted that maqasid syariah had always been the guiding principle of the country’s administrations to ensure the well-being of all Malaysians.
Another principle, the protection of religion, was discussed throughout the MCO, which, it said, had created a new norm in the life of Muslims.
“In the early stages, we had to close mosques to pray to avoid Covid-19 infections.
“Now, we have allowed congregational prayer, but it comes with a strict standard operating procedure.
“Here you can see how we defend the maqasid syariah, which is to protect lives and religion,” the prime minister said.
Muhyiddin said the government was committed to efforts to strengthen the syariah legal and judicial system in the country.
This included improving the jurisdiction of the courts, appointing more judges and court officials, he said.
“I am aware that the duty and responsibility that the syariah judges and officials have to assume is heavy.
“I hope they are patient, sincere and maintain great integrity in the performance of their duties,” he said.
Also present at the conference were the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Dr. Zulkifli Al-Bakri, and the Director General of the Syariah Judicial Department, Datuk, Dr. Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.
