PETALING JAYA: After leading Sapura Energy Bhd For 25 years, the group’s president and CEO, Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin, will call you one day on March 22 next year when he reaches the retirement age of 60.

He will pass the baton after ensuring that the group remained nimble and resilient during today’s challenging operating conditions and maintaining progress on its comprehensive transformation plan.

The board appointed 52-year-old Datuk Mohd Anuar Taib (pictured below) as chief operating officer and designated CEO effective October 1, as part of a six-month transition.

He was appointed an independent, non-executive director of Sapura Energy last month.

In a message to group employees, Shahril said that the energy industry is moving towards sustainable sources and Sapura Energy has all the ingredients to remain relevant and competitive in the new landscape.

“At the same time, we will continue to improve our productivity through the comprehensive optimization plan initiated in fiscal 2020.

“We have identified around 190 initiatives worth RM1.1 billion to execute over the next 12 months. We have implemented systems and processes to help us maintain consistency, efficiency, and value in our operations.

“These efforts have shown good progress and we cannot afford to lose momentum. Anuar and I will work together to ensure that these efforts continue.

“Please give him your greatest support, with the values that Sapura represents: act with trust, honesty and respect and operate with agility, professionalism and uncompromising security,” said Shahril.

He founded Sapura Energy in the mid-1990s, turning the group from its humble beginnings as a diving contractor into the global integrated oil and gas company it is today.

President Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas said that, under Shahril’s leadership, the group has grown from a national player to a renowned global oil and gas company serving the entire upstream value chain.

“This includes becoming an independent regional oil company through SapuraOMV, with net resources exceeding 260 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe), covering a significant part of Malaysia’s natural gas needs.

“Shahril’s legacy will be the group’s highly skilled and technically capable multinational human capital, world-class strategic assets, strong processes and strong project management capabilities,” said Shamsul.

Anuar was previously Executive Vice President of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and General Manager of the group’s upstream business.

At the national oil company, he was instrumental in improving the delivery of capital projects, reducing operating costs, and establishing the successful low-cost and marginal field subsidiary Vestigo Petroleum.

Prior to his tenure at Petronas, Anuar worked at Sarawak Shell Bhd for 22 years, where he was promoted to Chairman of Shell Companies Malaysia in 2010.

He has a Master of Business Administration in International Management from RMIT University, Australia and a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanics) from Case Western Reserve University, in the United States.
