KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah wants most of the national budget to go not only to finance development projects, but also to revitalize the economy and ensure the health and safety of people with a special allocation.
Its President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Photo)However, it remains uncommitted to support the 2021 Budget until the details are known. The former prime minister also said that there was no reason why Warisan MPs would not support him if it is appropriate and in line with Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree that all measures should be based on the welfare of the people and the interests of the nation.
Shafie, in an interview with Astro Awani, also agrees with reducing the salaries of parliamentarians and ministers if that helps “reduce the burden.”
“We need to thoroughly analyze whether the needs of certain places are adequate with the assistance that will be implemented. It’s micromanaging but it’s serious business.
“In Sabah, the health and medical system is still far behind. There are not only insufficient doctors, but also hospital facilities.
“I spoke to front-line people on the east coast of Sabah a few days ago, where community halls on the islands are being turned into quarantine centers.
“There is not enough space if we want to transfer patients from the islands to hospitals on the mainland. So if we can build facilities near them, it will ease their burden. That’s the kind of budget that’s ‘prihatin’ (careful) for people, ”he said Monday night.
“We need to see what measures can curb the virus and overcome the economic problems because even if we can fight Covid-19, the economic impact is expected to last longer,” he said.
