Shafie is not causing rifts in Pakatan, says Munirah of Warisan

KOTA KINABALU: A leader of the Parti Warisan Sabah has dismissed the idea that the party is causing a riff within Pakatan Harapan (PH), following the call of its president, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, for a change of leadership in the bloc of opposition.

The party’s Wirawati (young women) head, Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis, said Shafie’s statement was a wake-up call for the opposition to be strengthened by having more credible leadership.

“As an opposition party affiliated with Pakatan Harapan, Warisan is obliged to express concern about the overall performance of the opposition bloc in the country.

“Politics is about perception, and if voters think that the top leadership of the opposition bloc lacks credibility, obviously all of us (the opposition) will suffer,” he said.

He said the continued demand for a “formidable and convincing majority” to take over the government from September 16, as well as tactics to defeat the 2021 Budget, had tarnished the credibility of opposition parties.

“This will leave voters disappointed,” he added.

Munirah also said that Shafie only reminded Pakatan’s friends that, as opposition, “our strongest asset is reputation based on strong credibility” that must be protected.

He said the head of the opposition in Malaysia should not only focus on taking over the government or becoming prime minister, but should strive to unite and create a new Malaysia.

“That leader must be willing to sacrifice time, money and energy by visiting every state and interacting with local communities to understand their needs and aspirations.

The main focus of an opposition chief should not be limited to simply becoming prime minister, but also ending divisive politics, he added.

“Unfortunately, we no longer see the enthusiasm in our current opposition chief that he once had,” he said.
