Seven elderly among 18 arrested for gambling in Penang

BUKIT MERTAJAM (Bernama): Police detained 18 people, including seven older people, for gambling during a raid on a house in Sama Gagah here and confiscated RM16,000 in cash.

The Division Against Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies (D7) of the Penang Contingent Police Headquarters, acting on intelligence and surveillance, carried out the raid at 4pm on Sunday (February 14) and arrested to the suspects, between 30 and 80 years old.

According to sources, the police confiscated gambling items, such as multi-colored chips and mahjong tokens, as well as RM16,000 in cash, believed to be gambling money.

“Based on the initial investigation, the group, made up of 17 Myanmar men and one woman, rented the two-story house for the purpose of gambling in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration,” a police spokesman said when contacted on Sunday.

The head of the Penang Criminal Investigation Department, SAC Rahimi Mohd Ra’ais, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said investigations are ongoing.

He said the 18 were also made up of RM1,000 each for violating the motion control order (MCO). – Bernama
