SERGIO AGUERO admits that he is struggling with his return from knee surgery.
The Manchester City legend underwent surgery in late June and has only started three games since then.
And the 32-year-old Argentine forward says he doesn’t know overnight what his knee will feel like, which will strike fear in the hearts of City fans.
Every time Agüero has returned to Pep Guardiola’s side, it has been followed by a setback. And the Etihad club’s all-time top scorer of 256 goals said: “It’s tough. Sometimes my knee is good, sometimes a little bad.
“I’m doing my best to help the physical therapist and medical staff to help me get better; I need a little time.”
Guardiola revealed that Aguero had missed a day of training this week after playing the final 14 minutes of Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at home to West Brom.
But the City boss insists it has nothing to do with the knee problem.
And City will leave until the last minute to decide if Aguero can play any role against fit Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday.
Guardiola said on Friday: “Sergio couldn’t train on Thursday and he trained very well today but I don’t know how many minutes he can play.
“It is important that you can do training sessions.
“After the game it wasn’t about the knee, it was something else, but today I was training.”
Pep also warned the born-again John Stones not to drop his standards again.
The £ 47.5 million defender, 26, lost his way to the Etihad in early 2019 and is only just getting back to his best form.
Guardiola added: “His personal life, now arranged, is much better.
If you can avoid injury, you can be the player we’ve always believed you can be
Pep Guardiola
“What you have gained in the way you live your life and take care of yourself, your body, your mind, you must keep for ten years, 12 years.
“If he can avoid injuries, he can be the player we’ve always believed he can be.
“It gave us a good feeling, but it’s only two or three games.”
Stones has 18 months on his contract with the city and now has the opportunity to get an extension beyond the summer of 2022.
Pep said: “His attitude was always the same, but now we see him happier and stronger and that helps a lot.”
