PUTRAJAYA: Selangor has seen an increase in positive cases in the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, says Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.
He said that the state registered 132 new infections yesterday, which brings the total number of positive cases in Selangor to 3,489.
“For this third wave, Selangor has seen an increase in cases since September following the return of visitors from Sabah.
“The first reported group in Selangor in the third wave is the Jalan Apas group on September 28, which involved a family returning from Sabah.
“The upward trend in cases of local transmission in Selangor began on October 2 and has been constant until now,” he said yesterday at a press conference.
On Monday, Selangor registered 107 positive cases and 77 the day before.
So far, Selangor has 26 active clusters, 18 of them (69.2%) involving local transmissions, while eight (30.8%) were returnees from Sabah.
“Nine clusters (34.6%) are closely related to workplace transmission, while one cluster (3.8%) involves public shopping venues,” he said.
Dr. Noor Hisham also noted that the situation in Selangor was due to the high density of residents and the high frequency of trips involving residents and visitors in the state.
Yesterday, Dr. Noor Hisham said that Malaysia recorded 862 new infections. This is the fourth day in a row that cases have exceeded 800.
Of the total number of cases, two were imported from Egypt and Indonesia, which were reported in Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak respectively.
The rest were local broadcasts, including four returnees from Sabah.
Three new deaths were reported in Sabah: a 78-year-old man and two 59 and 90-year-old women. They are all Malaysians.
The death toll from Covid-19 in the country is now 193 people.
A total of 634 patients have been discharged while active cases have risen to 7,681.
Currently, 95 people are being treated in intensive care units and 29 of them require respiratory assistance.
Dr. Noor Hisham noted that a new group had been identified in Kota Belud, Sabah.
“The index case of Kertang’s group is a close contact who tested positive on October 14 and has been admitted to the quarantine and treatment center at PPR Taman Seri Bayu in Kota Belud.
“From close contact evaluations, another 19 positive cases have been identified.
“As of noon (yesterday), a total of 216 people have been tested and 21 have tested positive,” said Dr. Noor Hisham, adding that there are currently 86 active groups in the country.
The Kepayan Prison Group in Sabah registered 213 new cases yesterday with a total of 415 cases so far.
The Tembok group registered four new cases and is now the largest group with 1,576 accumulated cases.
Two groups, the Setapak group in Kuala Lumpur and the Selamat group in Sabah, have declared themselves closed after not registering new infections for 28 days in a row.
