PETALING JAYA: A factory has been identified as the source of the contamination that caused the suspension of operations of four water treatment plants in Selangor.
Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said that the factory has since been sealed and appropriate measures were taken.
“The factory has been sealed and a compound was issued. An investigative document has also been opened for prosecution purposes, ”he said today.
He expressed support for amendments to federal law to punish the operators of such factories.
Amirudin added that since yesterday efforts were being made to eliminate the effects of the contamination.
“Efforts now under way include putting powdered charcoal (activated carbon) to reduce the effects of odor pollution, pumping water from the Bestari Jaya pond to 400 million liters of water per day, and releasing water from the dam. Sungai Tinggi in order to rinse and dilute the contamination. “
He said that 78 tankers, 22 tanks from giant trucks, 54 static tanks, 18 local service centers and eight public water taps had been mobilized to help those affected. In addition, 23,000 five-liter bottles of drinking water have been distributed.
Air Selangor officials will continue to monitor the situation, he said.
The operations of the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant and phases 1, 2 and 3 of the Sungai Selangor water treatment plants were closed yesterday following the discovery that the water source had been contaminated.
A total of 1,292 locations in seven areas of the Klang Valley are experiencing water supply disruptions. This includes Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang / Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak, and Kuala Langat.
