PETALING JAYA: All educational institutions in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Sabah will be closed during the conditional movement control order (MCO), says the Ministry of Education.

For Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, the closure from October 14 to October 27 will include kindergartens, schools, boarding schools, private schools, professional colleges, matriculation colleges and teacher training institutes (IPG).

The ministry added that this will involve 1,088 educational institutions with a total of 935,984 students in Selangor, including those in Klang and Petaling districts that were closed much earlier.

The closure will also affect 373 educational institutions, as well as 286,556 students in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

Earlier, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya would be under conditional MCO as of 12:01 am on October 14.

Ismail Sabri said the decision to impose the conditional MCO came after an increase in the number of positive Covid-19 cases.

As the closure will affect boarding schools, the ministry said that students’ parents or guardians can take them home.

“Students who are waiting for their parents to pick them up or those who want to stay at the boarding school throughout the school closing will be placed under the care of the boarding director.

“The needs of the students throughout that period will be covered by the educational institution,” he said.

Parents or guardians who can only pick up their children during the conditional MCO period should inform the educational institution and add that the administration will send a letter to the parents or guardian.

“This is a reference for the authorities in case they need to cross districts to pick up their son from boarding school,” he said.

The ministry added that all educational institutions, including kindergartens, schools, boarding schools, private schools, professional colleges and IPGs in Sabah, will also be closed from October 13 to 26.

This will involve 1,336 institutions with a total of 511,349 students, including institutions that were already closed in areas under a conditional MCO.

On October 9, the ministry announced that all schools in Sabah would be closed for two weeks, starting October 10, following an increase in Covid-19 cases in the state.

Meanwhile, the ministry said that for students who are required to sit for scheduled international exams during the conditional period of the MCO, students must obtain a letter from their respective schools so they can sit for their exams.

“The administration of the educational institution has been instructed to ensure that teachers and lecturers, as well as students, continue learning and teaching at home. Teaching and learning manuals can be downloaded from the ministry website.” , He said.
