School principals are urged to use discretion to remind teachers

KUALA LUMPUR: School principals (PGB) should use their discretion to decide if teachers, especially those who are far away, need to return to their respective stations to work during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) period.

The President of the Malaysian Residential School Alumni Association, Dr. Ab Wahab Che Mat, said that teaching and learning can be done online anywhere and that teachers are not required to be present at their workstations.

“The priority for teachers now is to continue the teaching lesson from home until schools reopen and therefore reduce the hassle of teachers who are already in their hometown to return to their workstations,” said.

The issue of teachers being instructed by their bosses to return to their workstations, as all government offices were opened, has gone viral.

The Vice Chancellor of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Professor Datuk, Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran, opined that, although the teachers were bound by the “Aku Janji” service commitment, the matter should be analyzed in light of the current context.

It said a statement by the Prime Minister on May 1 that the government encouraged public officials to work from home, except for work processes.

“So I hope the PGB understands this. With proper planning, the school administration can continue and teachers can continue their online work at home until the ministry announces a date, ”he added.

Former Chief Education Officer Tan Sri Dr. Wan Wan Zahid Mohd Noordin believed the problem arose due to conflicting views on the matter, including from the PGB.

“We do not want any instructions to be vague, with people who are not clear on what to do, with complaints here and there. So the Ministry of Education has to issue clear guidelines, “he added.

Meanwhile, a teacher posted on Facebook that until there was an official announcement about the reopening of schools, the PGB should allow teachers to work wherever they want.

According to the professor, following the Prime Minister’s announcement to allow almost all economic sectors to resume operations, various instructions emerged for employees to return to work.

“The problem is that the instructions were through WhatsApp or Telegram, there is no black and white,” said the professor.

“In my opinion, since there are only two more weeks left before the school holidays (Aidilfitri holidays), allow the teachers to stay wherever they are.

“It is almost certain that the schools will not reopen before the school holidays,” added the teacher. – Bernama
