SUNGAI BULOH: Police have paralyzed a union run by a husband and wife who targeted the front-line and allegedly sold them “special offers” for non-existent vacation packages.

Sungai Buloh OCPD Supt Shafa’aton Abu Bakar said they were alerted to the problem after a nurse was tricked into buying one of the vacation packages on September 13.

“He saw a WhatsApp post in a group with his colleagues about a vacation package to Port Dickson for between RM88 and RM499 and contacted the company,” Supt Shafa’aton said at the Sungai Buloh police headquarters on Monday (September 28).

She said the company told the nurse that she could act as her agent and offered her a 10% commission for each referral.

Supt Shafa’aton said the nurse then managed to get 26 of her colleagues to make reservations in the amount of RM7,778 with the company.

“The complainant filed a report when checks with the hotel showed that no reservations had been made.

“A team from Sungai Buloh’s commercial crime investigation department raided a family home in Ampang on September 24 and arrested a man and a woman aged 27 and 26 respectively,” he said.

Supt Shafa’aton added that the man was the owner of the company and the woman, his wife, acted as liaison with the “agents” and clients who had made reservations.

He said the investigation revealed that the company was not registered with the Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture and that none of the hotels or residences designated it as an agent.

“They received payment from customers and made reservations through an online travel booking platform. The investigation revealed that actual packages were never offered,” he said.

Supt Shafa’aton also said police seized four mobile phones and a laptop and that they have held the couple until September 29 to assist in future investigations.

She said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
