Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg says the key factor for Sarawak to become a high-income state is quality civil service.

KUCHING: Sarawak’s Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg says he is confident that Sarawak can become a developed and high-income state by 2030, by focusing on the digital and knowledge-based economy.

He said the government is learning from two countries, namely Estonia, in terms of its digital infrastructure development, and South Korea, for its knowledge-based economy.

Estonia, he said, is recognized as one of the most advanced digital societies in the world, while South Korea has focused on education, science, technology and innovation to produce quality workforce.

“We need a quality workforce, especially in our civil service, which is a key factor in Sarawak becoming a high-income state by 2030,” he said today at an event near here.

Abang Johari said that in the modern era, citizens were better educated with easy access to technologies that not only force governments to be more transparent but also to rethink notions of transparency.

“We need to modernize service delivery that is focused on citizen-centric and focus-based results. People expect more efficient and effective service.

“Therefore, I would like to present this new challenge to everyone in public administration, that these innovative citizen-centered solutions are further developed and improved.

“The civil service plays an important role in helping the government develop the state and get closer to the people,” he said.
