KUCHING: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) agreed to relax the mandatory 14-day quarantine order for the parents of a Sibu college student who was killed in Taiwan upon his return to the state.

SUPP Youth chief Michael Tiang said the parents are returning home with the ashes of their daughter, identified as Irene Chung, 24, today.

He said they are expected to arrive at KLIA at 1:15 p.m. before taking the next flight to Kuching at 1:45 p.m. and will arrive in Sibu at 5:30 p.m.

Tiang said that according to SOPs, all arrivals in Sarawak must pass 14 days’
quarantine at the first point of entry.

“If we follow SOPs, parents should be quarantined in Kuching, but SDMC has agreed to allow them to do so in Sibu,” he said, adding that yesterday they had undergone a Covid-19 swab test in Taiwan.

“We want to make things easier for them during this difficult time, but we cannot be too accommodating as the state has reported double digit cases in recent days,” he said.

Chung’s body was found in the Alian mountainous district of Kaohsiung after he was reported missing on October 29. A suspect was arrested and confessed to strangling her with a rope before dumping her body the same day.

The suspect was arrested for voluntary manslaughter and sexual assault.

Chung’s parents flew to Taiwan on Sunday to organize the funeral.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang have apologized to the family and Malaysians for the murder.
