Sarawak police killed in traffic accident while chasing suspected criminals in Johor Bahru

JOHOR BAHRU (Nov 1): A police officer was killed and another seriously injured in a road accident when his patrol car collided with a van and overturned while chasing suspected criminals in a car in Jalan Kangkar Tebrau / Jalan Tun Teja here today.

Johor Police Chief Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said 20-year-old Officer Nicholester Dadup Unggat was killed at the scene in the accident that occurred around 5 a.m.

He said that the victim and 32-year-old Corporal Lance Mohammad Fadhirul Musa saw two men in a Perodua Myvi car suspiciously along Jalan Tebrau and ordered them to stop, but the car sped up.

“The policemen, both from the Dato ‘Onn police station, chased them before their car brushed against the Perodua Myvi and collided with a Perodua Aruz van carrying two men in Jalan Kangkar Tebrau / Jalan Tun Teja,” he said when he met at the Sultan Ismail Hospital Forensic Department here.

The impact of the collision caused the patrol to capsize, killing Nicholester and wounding Mohammad Fadhirul, as well as the two men in the Perodua Aruz, it added.

Ayob Khan said that Perodua Myvi managed to escape and that police are now tracking the two men in the car.

Meanwhile, Tebrau Fire and Rescue Station operation commander Kamsani Aswan said seven firefighters on two engines were transferred to the scene after receiving a distress call at 6.24 am.

He said that Nicholester’s body was taken to Sultan Ismail Hospital and the injured victims were also sent there for treatment.

Meanwhile, Nicholester’s brother-in-law, Hycinth Joneka, 26, described him as a calm person and a good son.

The Permai Hospital medical assistant said he was at his workplace when he received a phone call from his mother-in-law at 8.30 am informing him about the incident that happened to Nicholester.

“I was very surprised to hear the news,” he told reporters at the Sultan Ismail Hospital Forensic Department (HSI).

Previously, Ayob Khan conveyed his deepest condolences to Hycinth and his wife Elizcavelynicy Unchi Unggat, 23, on the passing of Nicholester.

Hycinth said her late brother-in-law had just reported to work at the Bandar Dato ‘Onn Police Station here in April after completing his training at the Kuching Police Training Center (Pulapol) in Sarawak.

“The last time I saw him was two weeks ago at his rented house in Bandar Dato ‘Onn. I didn’t notice anything unusual about him, ”he said, adding that Agent Nicholester’s body would be brought back to his hometown of Sibu Jaya, Sarawak tomorrow night. – Bernama
