KUCHING: Senior Deputy Minister Douglas Uggah Embas said today that Sarawak is on high alert to prevent the spread of Covid-19 after the Sabah elections, as many are expected to return home from the neighboring state next week.
He said that Sabah is now a red zone with an alarming number of new Covid-19 cases and recent reports have indicated that those returning from Sabah have tested positive for the virus.
“Yesterday some 500 state policemen were dispatched to Sabah to strengthen security and some high-level local politicians are also campaigning there,” he said in a statement.
“Besides, we also have Sabahans who come home to cast their vows and then come back here.”
He said that it was therefore necessary to form a “protective shield” around Sarawak to prevent an outbreak.
Uggah, also chairman of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee, said that although the state had registered zero cases in recent days, that did not mean it was safe.
“We have some new requirements for those returning from Sabah, including Sarawak residents. They must undergo a 14-day home quarantine and be tested on the second and tenth days. “
He said that while this would be inconvenient or difficult for stakeholders, everyone must adhere to the SOPs.
“We have to be firm because it is a very difficult time and situation,” he added.
