KUCHING: Several Sarawak NGO members have filed a police report against PAS deputy Pasir Puteh, Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, for his comments on the Bible last week.
The Sarawak Movement of Change (MoCS) members Mike Lim, Robert Ho and Edmund Lee presented the report against Zawawi at the police headquarters here this morning. They were accompanied by the movement’s legal advisor, See Chee How.
“We stand with the Sarawak Association of Churches, the Malaysian Christian Federation and all Christians to demand that Zawawi unreservedly apologize for his comments,” Lee told reporters after presenting the report.
“We urge him to retract his statement made in Parliament on August 26. We also urge the police and relevant authorities to investigate and take appropriate action.”
During the recent Parliament debate on higher penalties for driving under the influence, Zawawi said that the biblical injunctions on drinking had been “distorted or altered”, prompting widespread reprimand from Christian associations and the politicians.
Later, the MoCS members pointed out that Sarawak, which consisted of more than 20 ethnic groups of various religions, had harmoniously coexisted in addition to having mutual respect even before the formation of Malaysia.
Sarawak DAP also filed a complaint against Zawawi last Sunday.
In Sabah, political leaders had also urged the PAS deputy to retract his comments.
Zawawi has since said that he would not apologize and that Christians “have no right to be offended.”
