SAMARAHAN: The Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said today that Gabungan Parti Sarawak prioritizes the health and safety of the people and will not rush to call elections.

He said he was closely monitoring the Covid-19 situation while waiting for comments from the Health Ministry and the Electoral Commission (EC).

“I have said it before; I will listen to the advice of the experts, especially the ministry of health. But I have not received any comments yet.

“So let’s give them more time to come up with the new SOPs. When the EC is ready, we are ready, ”he told reporters after a Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat event.

When asked if Sarawak’s 12 state elections are unlikely to be held this year, Abang Johari said he did not have a suitable date yet.

“I do not know either. It is the Covid-19 (situation) that will decide when the state elections will be held, ”he said, adding that since Kuching has been classified as a red zone, the state government must first focus on slowing the spread of the disease. .

“We will decide later, but for now, the health and safety of our people is the top priority,” he said.

State elections should be held in June of next year.
