KUALA LUMPUR (September 21): Sapura Energy Bhd Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin, one of the city’s highest-paid senior executives, will retire from his positions on his 60th birthday in March next year.

In a stock presentation, the oil and gas giant (O&G), in which Permodalan Nasional Bhd controls a 32.8% stake, announced that its board had appointed Datuk Mohd Anuar Taib as its chief operating officer and CEO. designated beginning next month, as part of a six-month transition.

Mohd Anuar Taib, who joined Sapura Energy last month, is no stranger to the O&G industry. Prior to this appointment, Anuar Taib was executive vice president and chief executive officer of Petronas’ upstream division. He left the national oil company a year ago. He was Chairman of Shell Companies in Malaysia in 2010.

Shahril, who co-founded Sapura Energy and owns a 13.9% stake, has been in charge for 25 years, including the first years at SapuraCrest Petroleum Bhd before the merger with Kencana Petroleum Bhd.

“Under his leadership, Sapura Energy has grown from a player focused on the domestic market to a recognized global O&G company serving the entire upstream value chain. This includes becoming an independent regional oil company through SapuraOMV, with net resources in excess of 260MMboe (million barrels of oil equivalent), which covers a significant part of Malaysia’s natural gas needs.

“Shahril’s legacy will be the group’s highly qualified and technically capable multinational human capital, world-class strategic assets, strong processes and strong project management capabilities,” said Sapura Energy President Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas. .

Sapura shares ended 0.5 sen higher at 12 sen each, valued at about RM1.84 billion. Today saw 123.06 million shares change hands.
