Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra performance test: a closer look at the Exynos 990 chipset

In this article, we’ll dive deeper into the Galaxy Note20 Ultra’s performance in mobile gaming and battery life.

Maybe you’re rolling your eyes from the fact that you’re using an Exynos 990 chipset. Okay, it’s not on the same level as the Snapdragon 865 chipset, but it doesn’t mean it’s as bad as many say. Comparative scores

Benchmarking a smartphone is one way to find out how powerful a chipset is and is standard practice for device reviewers. While that’s the case, we also need to remind everyone that scores aren’t everything and that the Exynos 990 chipset didn’t affect our overall user experience. With that said, below are our screenshots of 3DMark and Geekbench 5.

In 3DMark, the device scored 6580 and 6277 points for Sling Shot Extreme (OpenGL ES 3.1) and Sling Shot Extreme Vulkan respectively. Then on Geekbench 5, its single-core score was 682 points, while the multi-core score was 2653 points. If you compare that to the Galaxy S20 FE, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra performed better in the Sling Shot Extreme Vulkan and Single-Core tests, but it loses when it comes to the Sling Shot Extreme (OpenGL ES 3.1) and Multi-Core tests.

Mobile gaming tests

As for the mobile gaming experience, we previously talked about whether playing at 120Hz + 1080p or 60Hz + 1440p is better. For us, we think that adjusting the game settings to 60Hz + 1080p is more than enough for two reasons: Most mobile gaming apps cannot beat the 60Hz refresh rate and it is difficult to differentiate 1080p and 1440p. On top of that, this setting is better for keeping battery consumption low, which we’ll get to later.

Besides mobile games, Samsung’s Game Launcher app is available for this phone and it’s good. Battery performance

Since we’ve tested a lot of smartphones this year, we can measure battery performance a bit. The Galaxy Note20 Ultra has a typical battery drain of just 10% in 30 minutes in any mobile game, so that’s a good sign. To upgrade its memory, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra has a 4500 mAh battery and supports fast charging of up to 25 W. But how fast does 25W charge? Well, it can fill the battery to 50% in 30 minutes and a full charge is just over an hour.

If you want to extend your battery life, you can also set it to a refresh rate of just 60Hz even at 2K resolution. Also, if you are just concentrating on your work and not playing any mobile games, the phone will last you a day (or two) with ease. This is a productivity device at its finest!
