Sabah’s government continues to ease restrictions in various economic sectors, tourism industry can operate

KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal announced today the opening of more sectors in the state during the fifth phase of the Movement Control Order (MCO), which lasted until June 9.

The state’s tourism industry is one of the sectors that received the green light from the government to start operating again as of May 10.

Shafie in a statement also said that travel between districts will be allowed, but in strict compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) issued by the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities.

“Internal tourism (only within Sabah) is allowed, as well as all activities that include accommodation, adventure and recreation, tourist attractions, food and beverages, ticketing and transportation services, among others.

“Hotels may also reopen, but facilities such as suraus, gym, spa, sauna, lounge, pool, meeting rooms, seminar room, training room and buffets will remain closed,” he said.

He said the state government also decided to increase the number of domestic flights to and from Sabah and urged aviation companies to increase flights from Kuala Lumpur / Johor Bahru / Pulau Pinang / Kota Bahru / Alor Star / Kuching / Miri / Bintulu to Sabah and vice versa.

This call is also for in-state flights.

Shafie added that cultural research and education are allowed, as well as cultural activities such as arts and crafts, music and dance, which are limited to less than 10 people per session.

Recreational and environmental research activities as well as services offered by Sabah Parks and sanctuaries such as Tabin Wildlife Resort, Danum Valley, Maliau Basin, Imbak Canyon, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, KK Wet Land and private Managed activities can now resume operations.

Permits to harvest bird nests and other activities will now be issued, he said, adding that all activities in the culture and tourism environment sector and its network must be carried out in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) issued by the Ministry of Health and the relevant authorities. .

Athletes included in elite and high performance sporting events such as athletics, tennis, e-sport, motor sports (cubprix), grass bowl, archery, shooting, weightlifting, cycling, sailing, pentanch, squash, ping pong, silambam, wushu, karate (kata), taekwondo (kata), and bodybuilding have been cleared to start training again by the state government.

However, any massive sports or recreational activities such as golf, cycling, motorsports, jogging, and aerobics, as well as other forms of physical exercise involving the public, must be performed in groups of less than 10 people.

Facilities such as a golf driving range, jogging track, grass field, archery and shooting ranges, as well as public parks are also open and can be used in strict compliance with the SOP.

Contact sports, water sports, indoor sports and fan gathering are still banned at the moment.

Professionals such as engineers, lawyers, architects, accountants, financial consultants, surveyors, dietitians, physical therapists, dentists, veterinarians, optometrists, medical specialists, and pharmacists who are registered with their respective professional bodies are also among those who can now resume services.

“Beginning May 10, the state government allows all facilities that sell motor vehicles, bicycles, and heavy machinery to resume operations.

“The state government would like to remind everyone in Sabah to continue practicing social distancing, wear a face mask, and always use a disinfectant when running errands for your safety and that of your family and community,” Shafie said.
