KOTA KINABALU: Residents and businesses in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Putatan generally comply with the conditional movement control order (MCO).

A tour of these areas found fewer cars than usual on the roads, and the stores that were open were those included in the essential services industry, such as restaurants, pharmacies, supermarkets and hotels.

Affected residents cannot leave the areas, while employers have to allow their staff members to retire or work from home.

Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Habibi Majinji said that so far there has been no breach of the conditional MCO.

“We will continue with the hurdles and monitor the public’s adherence to the conditional MCO,” he said.

The areas under Kota Kinabalu include the city center, Tanjung Aru, Luyang, Likas, Sepanggar, Inanam, Manggatal and part of the KKIP (Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park), where the police will be at the borders to monitor vehicles.

Since Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Putatan are considered an area for the application of this conditional MCO, people who live in these three districts can travel within these areas.

However, they are not allowed to leave the three adjacent districts, just as those outside the areas cannot enter without permission from the authorities.

Penampang OCPD Deputy Superintendent Mohd Haris Ibrahim said they were stepping up their operations in areas under the Penampang and Putatan districts.

He said there shouldn’t be any confusion as to where the borders were because any place considered under the Putatan or Penampang districts was affected during this phase of the MCO.

“If your village or area is coded as Penampang or Putatan, then it means that it is subject to the rules of the conditional MCO,” he said. The conditional MCO in these areas is in effect for two weeks from yesterday through October 20.

Depending on the current Covid-19 situation, any changes can be announced later.

Apart from businesses, 122 schools (86 primary, 25 secondary and 11 private) in the three districts are also closed.
