PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Health has asked everyone involved in the Sabah election to strictly adhere to the Covid-19 guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said the infectivity rate of the virus or “R0” is increasing and therefore more work is needed to reduce transmission in communities.

“If you don’t have any business outside the community, it is recommended that you stay home.

“In Sabah, the National Security Council and the Election Commission have developed standard operating procedures (SOPs) for campaigning and voting activities.

“The ministry is pleading, please adhere to the SOPs regardless of your status and position in the community.

“Help the country reduce the spread of Covid-19 disease,” Dr. Noor Hisham said in a statement on Thursday (September 24).

Sabah’s election is currently in the 14-day campaign period and the state will go to the polls this Saturday (September 26).

Yet Sabah continues to produce the highest number of Covid-19 cases of any state on a daily basis.

Of the 71 new cases in the country on Thursday, 63 were detected in Sabah.

Dr. Noor Hisham said that four of the country’s “red zones” are in Sabah – Tawau, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Semporna – in addition to Kota Setar in Kedah.

“If you have symptoms and have just visited a red zone, it is mandatory that you undergo a Covid-19 test at the nearest health center.

“People who have no symptoms, but who have also been in red zones, are also encouraged to take the test and self-quarantine. This is to protect his own family, friends and people in the nearby community, ”said Dr. Noor Hisham.

Sabah’s election campaign period has seen at least two politicians testing positive for Covid-19.

Umno’s chief information officer, Shahril Hamdan, and the party’s supreme council member, Datuk Mohd Razlan Rafi, were among those who tested positive for the virus.
