KOTA KINABALU: Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has stayed away from campaigning in Sabah for the second time, only appearing in one campaign video.

Dr. Mahathir did not come to Sabah during GE14 as he was criticized for accusations of granting citizenship to illegal aliens during his tenure as fourth prime minister.

Dr. Mahathir’s theme was used by Barisan Nasional in GE14 and was extended to Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) by Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who is a friend of Pakatan Harapan.

It is clear that Warisan Plus was not encouraging Dr. Mahathir to come to Sabah to campaign for the snap state elections, while the only faces of Peninsular Malaysia seen so far include Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Lim Guan Eng, among others. others.

Dr. Maszlee Malik had appeared early in the campaign, but was not encouraged to go ahead.

In the campaign video for Warisan Plus, Dr. Mahathir said that people should reject a government that uses money to “buy” elected representatives.

Noting that he will not be present in the campaigns of the 16th state election, Dr. Mahathir said that the state election should not be held in the first place, as the Sabahans had voted for the government they wanted during GE14.

But the leaders of Perikatan Nasional want to take over an elected government in Sabah. This is wrong because it steals the rights of the Sabahans.

“Also, he is against democracy, where Perikatan uses the money to buy elected representatives voted by Sabahans,” he said.

“If that is the way Perikatan tries to be the government, then the Sabahans will lose the right to elect the government of their choice,” he added.

He also said that this is the time when the government should focus on addressing the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic depression.

“This is not the time for the policy of crosses and money,” he added.

Dr Mahathir said that the Sabahans are deeply affected by the Covid-19 crisis as the economy was forced to shut down to stop the unprecedented pandemic.

“Many will be unemployed and many will also lose their source of income,” he added.

Dr. Mahathir said that the government could not fully focus on helping the people if they had to hold state elections.

“The government wasted hundreds of millions of ringgit to hold elections. That money should have been used to help people, ”he said.

Sabah will head to its 16th state election on September 26.
