KOTA KINABALU: The Appeals Court’s decision to reject the offer of Tan Sri Musa Aman and 33 Sabah assembly members to overturn the dissolution of the state assembly has been welcomed by state politicians.
They said that on Tuesday (September 8) democracy had prevailed with the ruling, as the next state elections could now continue on September 26.
Sabah Barisan Nasional President Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said he was happy with the decision.
“Although we have friends among the 33 assembly members, the reality is that the court’s decision will be better for Sabah,” he said.
“I hope nobody jumps (ship) like in the last elections. I believe that the elected Barisano candidates have integrity and will stay with their own party, ”he said.
Bung also said that both sides of the political divide should respect the results of the September 26 elections and not resort to forming the government through crossovers.
“Whoever the candidate is, there should be no more ‘boat jumping’ like last time. This election will show people that the winner will be respected, whoever wins, ”he said.
Warisan Permanent Chairman Datuk Liew Vui Keong said he welcomed the court’s decision and added that the governor’s decision should not be challenged in any court.
“Musa, however, continued to challenge this power of our governor out of fear of facing the Sabahans at the polls later this month. But justice has prevailed, ”he said.
Liew urged Musa to respect the decision of the judiciary and prepare for the Sabah state elections on September 26.
“Let the Sabahans themselves freely and democratically choose a state government of their choice, to exercise their consent to be governed,” he added.
Sabah Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Vice President Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the court’s decision was not surprising given the complex legal technicalities and points of law involved.
“Everyone should have been more prepared for the election than the outcome of the court case,” he added.
Earlier on Tuesday (September 8), the Court of Appeal rejected the appeal of the 33 assembly members against a High Court ruling on the Sabah governor’s decision to dissolve the state assembly on June 30.
With the decision of the appeals court, the state election will proceed as scheduled.
Nominations are set for September 12, while voting will be on September 26.
