KOTA KINABALU, March 6: Sabah’s former federal minister and political veteran, Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Gilong, passed away today at the age of 88.
According to his granddaughter Cheri Gilong Avriett, Abdul Ghani died of old age at 12.12am at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.
Sharing the news of Abdul Ghani’s passing on Facebook, Cheri and her son-in-law Norman Radzuan asked people to pray that his soul would be placed among the righteous.
Abdul Ghani had served under the first three prime ministers of Malaysia, his last post being that of Minister of Public Works and Services in 1978.
Abdul Ghani, who was born on May 30, 1932 in Kampung Matan, Ranau, was one of the Sabah leaders involved in the formation of Malaysia.
He had also served as a federal minister in the justice and transportation portfolios.
Abdul Ghani, who was vice president of the UPKO in 1964, had followed local political developments even after his retirement from politics.
The Vice Chancellor of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Professor Datuk Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin, said that Abdul Ghani’s death was a great loss for the country and the people of Sabah.
“He was one of four winners of the Anugerah Tokoh Malaysia Award awarded in conjunction with the Malaysian Day celebration in 2010 for his pivotal role in Sabah’s involvement in the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963,” he said in a Facebook post. .
