KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is able to prosper and become an industrialized state even if the federal government doesn’t help, says Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

Sabah’s interim prime minister said that talking about Sabah could not develop without the federal government was not correct.

“Sabah has been with the federal government for almost 60 years and yet we are still among the poorest states in Malaysia. There is still so much basic infrastructure that is not available, so what does this show? I ask.

He was speaking at the launch of the Kota Kinabalu Landscape Beautification Plan here on Monday (September 7).

He said Sabah, being a resource-rich state, could generate income and develop much better than other states if its resources were properly managed.

Shafie said the future of Sabah depended on its people, where unity and unity, as well as the right mindset, could lead the state in the right direction.

He said that the most important thing is to have the right policies, a systematic leadership, as well as cultivate the right values and mindset among the people.

He advised people not only to rely on their status or the special rights of natives and bumiputera to live on aid and grants, but to learn and work hard to improve their livelihoods.

On other matters, Shafie said that former Prime Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat’s statement that the newly established state Health and Education Departments was a waste of resources and a redundancy was absurd.

“We give priority to education, because it is very necessary for the betterment of our children,” he said.

Meanwhile, he urged the public to protect and care for the environment, as well as the beauty and cleanliness of Kota Kinabalu city, by embracing good values and instilling morality in his children.
