Running Check Disk in Windows 10 20H2 can potentially damage SSDs

If you have recently updated your Windows 10 OS with the latest 20H2 update and are planning to do a Check Disk (ChkDsk) scan, you may want to postpone that action. Especially if you are running an SSD.

Apparently running the utility on the latest version of Windows 10 runs the risk of corrupting files on the SSD, especially if you are attaching the “/ f” parameter, which instructs you to repair the disk. As part of its procedure, starting it asks the operating system to reboot so that the decades utility will run at startup. For some users and their SSDs, the action can result in the Blue Screen of Death, or more affectionately known by its acronym, BSOD.

It is not yet clear why this problem occurs. Also, because the action damages the file systems on the SSD, an automatic or manual repair is required to get the affected system working again.

At the time of writing, Microsoft has not addressed the issue and has yet to release an official statement. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.
