KUALA LUMPUR: The bars of the Royal Selangor Club were closed at the Dataran clubhouse and Bukit Kiara annex after Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) took action over complaints about the lack of social distancing.
A DBKL team cordoned off the Long Bar and Hash Bar, as well as the Winery, which was not in operation. Club management then closed the Pavilion bar in Bukit Kiara.
The action followed complaints that certain members were not observing physical estrangement while sipping drinks at the Long Bar and Hash Bar. Photographs of revelers circulating on messaging apps led to complaints from “people who ignored simple regulations “
It was learned that club management would seek clarity about the closure of DBKL bars tomorrow morning. FMT is waiting for a response from DBKL and club president Sylvester Devaraj.
The club released a notice to members dated May 10 that management had been advised not to open the bars while the conditional motion control order was in effect. “As such, Hash Bar, Long Bar and Pavilion will be closed immediately,” the notice read.
Food outlets at Verandah, Chinese Restaurant and Coffee House would operate with limited menus from noon to 10 p.m. M. “Subject to compliance with social distancing and CMCO standard operating procedure.”
The RSC bars reopened on Wednesday, 49 days after the club’s activities ceased on March 18 following the MCO’s application across the country.
Several members said the club should take disciplinary action against members who did not observe the rules of social distancing. A member who requested anonymity said club security guards also had trouble controlling a crowd on Friday.
Another member said that the irresponsible members had also distributed photos of their gays over drinks, and had brought shame on the club.
The City Council is expected to carry out surprise checks at other social clubs to ensure strict compliance with CMCO regulations.
