Romain Grosjean’s wife wrote an emotional statement on Instagram Monday in which she saluted her husband for getting out of his fireball car during the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday.
The driver’s car broke in half and caught fire after the first lap accident that stunned the sports world.
Wife Marion, a French television personality who watched the drama unfold at her home in Geneva, wrote: “Thanks to our children, who pushed him out of the fire.”

The couple, who married in 2012, have two boys and a girl, Sacha (7), Simon (5) and Camille (2).

The 34-year-old Frenchman, hailed as a ‘superhero’ by Marion, escaped from his burning car after punching through safety barriers at 140 mph with little more than burns to the top of both hands.

Ian Roberts, the British medical delegate who quickly appeared on the scene, said: “He was very shaky and his visor was completely opaque and melted. I had to take it off just to check that everything was okay.
“ He had some pain in his foot and hands, so from that moment we knew that it was safe enough to take him to the car (doctor), put some gel on the burns and then take him to the ambulance and the medical center ”
Grosjean was admitted to the hospital for a second night, but is likely to be released Tuesday. Pietro Fittipaldi, grandson of two-time world champion Emerson, will take his place at the Sakhir Grand Prix, a second consecutive race in Bahrain, but this time in a different setup.
The FIA has opened its investigation into the incident, and race director Michael Masi said there will be no “instinctive” safety changes in the meantime.
