KUCHING (August 28): Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has announced that the current Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) will run until December 31.
He announced the RMCO extension during a special live broadcast on major television and social media channels tonight.
The current RMCO is scheduled to end on August 31 after it went into effect on June 10.
Prior to RMCO, the government enforced the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) from May 13 to June 10 and the Movement Control Order (MCO) from March 18 to May 12 to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Muhyiddin said that despite the country’s new positive Covid-19 cases having remained in single digits recently, Malaysians should not take the matter lightly.
He said that the government had no choice but to continue implementing mechanisms and laws to break the chain of Covid-19 infection throughout the country.
“This is to ensure that all parties will continue to comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and health protocols established by the government.”
The prime minister warned Malaysians that the number of Covid-19 cases globally continues to rise, and that the virus is spreading at a faster and wider rate.
As such, he said Malaysia will continue to impose the mandatory 14-day quarantine order for Malaysians returning from abroad and non-Malaysians visiting the country.
With such strict quarantine orders, he said no individual will be exempt from it and that any individual found to be in breach of the order will face a penalty.
“I appreciate the suggestion of the relevant authorities to increase the compound two to three times more than the existing amount under Law 342. Of course, we need an amendment to the Law to do so.”
Although the government has decided to extend the RMCO until the end of the year, Muhyiddin believes that such a move will not affect the daily lives of Malaysians as people will adopt the new rules and comply with the standard operating procedures set by the government.
“More importantly, everyone should wear masks, wash their hands while taking care of their own health and avoiding crowded places,” he said.
