KUALA LUMPUR: Graduates must rethink their priorities and consider the employment opportunities available to them.
The time to look down on jobs that some see as menial is over, according to Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) executive director Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan.
He noted that there are now 68,000 jobs available in the plantation sector, mostly for harvesters.
“Of course it is a difficult job, but with a monthly salary of RM2,500 with accommodation, it is a good start,” he told the Sun yesterday.
However, he said graduates were unwilling to consider such jobs due to social stigma.
“In this period of economic slowdown, they have to be willing to take those jobs to earn income.
Shamsuddin said that in these tough times, employers are reluctant to increase their workforce.
To help themselves, he said new graduates might consider entering entrepreneurship training programs.
“Instead of looking for long-term work, they could become job creators and help the economy grow.”
Shamsuddin said that there are a lot of jobs available in the security sector for those who don’t care about social stigma.
He also said that security companies needed to change the way they operate to attract people to join them.
They could take simple steps like introducing more technology to ease the burden on their employees, he added.
Shamsuddin said that graduates might also consider becoming marketers, as there are many jobs available in this sector.
“The concert economy is growing at a dizzying rate, but due to Covid-19, it is also becoming more competitive.”
He said that before the Covid-19 pandemic, around half a million people were involved in the concert economy.
“Now it has grown to about 2.8 million, which makes it very competitive.”
However, Shamsuddin expressed concern that it could be difficult to keep up with the rapid pace of growth in the concert economy.
