KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 3): Retail groups have questioned the rationale for restaurants with bar service closing at 11pm starting today, as Selangor’s Menteri Besar (MB) announced.

In a joint statement today, the Malaysian Retailers Association (MRA), the Malaysian Retail Chains Association (MRCA) and the Malaysian Shopping Center Association said they were perplexed by the sudden change in hours of operation as a All companies were allowed to operate until 2am earlier.

“We are all deeply concerned about the sudden increase in [daily new] Covid-19 cases in the last two days, and the industry and business community support actions that will mitigate the spread of the pandemic.

“However, we believe that the sudden change in hours of operation for a selected category of businesses is not the solution, but rather impairs efforts to recover, revive and survive with the reopening of the economy,” they said.

The groups said closing at 11 p.m. would have no relevance to the steps needed to stop the spread of the disease.

“Strict observance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) by everyone from individuals to businesses is the key to containing the spread of the disease.

“There is no correlation between the operating hours of bistro bar companies and the increase in Covid-19 cases, and this instruction is very disruptive and detrimental to the recovery process.

“Therefore, we seek urgent review from Selangor menteri besar (MB) on the change in hours of operation for this selected sector of the F&B industry (food and beverage), and to allow all types of businesses to operate, especially those in the F&B industry. common operating hours allowed so as not to cause further losses to the detriment of the restart, recovery and reactivation process towards sustainable survival, ”they said.
