PUTRAJAYA: The high number of positive Covid-19 infections recorded in four cities in eastern Sabah has prompted authorities to enforce an enhanced movement control order in Lahad Datu, Tawau, Kunak and Semporna from today until October 12.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that between September 1 and 27, health authorities registered 1,195 positive cases in the four districts.
Tawau registered 634 cases, Semporna (255), Lahad Datu (241) and Kunak (65).
“Regarding the figures, the government, with the advice of the Minister of Health, has decided to implement the specific enhanced MCO in these areas, effective from midnight tonight until 12 October.
“The implementation of the order will help curb the spread and infection of Covid-19 in the affected areas.
“It will also allow authorities to track and identify cases more effectively during the 14 days the order is enforced,” he added.
This latest order, which came just days after Sabah concluded its state elections, will involve 962,661 residents in the four districts.
Ismail Sabri said that during the targeted enhanced MCO, residents will not be allowed to leave the area.
“Visitors and non-residents will not be allowed into the four districts during this time.
“All commercial activities will stop, with the exception of stores that provide essential services and goods,” he said.
A medical base will be established and all inbound and outbound passengers will be closed.
Ismail Sabri said that to ensure that the order was carried out, the police, the Armed Forces, Civil Defense, Rela and the local authorities would have the authority to control these districts.
“We urge the public to remain calm and provide full cooperation to the health authorities and follow the orders issued by the authorities,” he said.
In another matter, a person who violated the home quarantine order was among 661 people who were detained for various violations under the recovery movement control order.
Ismail Sabri said most of those arrested on Sunday, 577 of them, were involved in pub and nightclub activities.
Police also detained individuals who failed to comply with standard operating procedure, including not wearing masks (30), for failing to practice physical distancing (42), for failing to provide login facilities for clients (eight) and for operating beyond. hours allowed (three). “As for Ops Benteng, the police arrested 40 illegal immigrants, five Tekong and one human smuggler during Sunday’s operation,” he added.
Authorities also set up 81 barricades across the country to control the smuggling of illegal immigrants into the country.
Ismail Sabri said that since July 24, a total of 35,344 people had returned to the country and were sent to designated quarantine stations, including at 66 hotels across the country.
Currently, 8,235 were in quarantine, while 28,006 were allowed to return home.
