BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Chinese national wife of a restaurant owner, who landed in the hot water for putting up a wallpaper with Communist leader Mao Zedong, explained that the posters actually showed humorous depictions of the good food available in the Chinese province of Henan.
The posters did not contain any messages of communist ideology, said the woman, who did not want to be named.
He said the wallpaper had fun Chinese phrases and was meant to welcome customers.
“Sometimes our customers also take pictures with the wallpaper in the background. It only serves as decoration, ”he said.
On Saturday, police removed the wallpaper after raiding the premises following a public notice.
The 764.5cm x 213cm wallpaper featured an image of Mao, a soldier holding a red book, and a group of soldiers.
Police also seized four small glasses bearing Mao’s face and detained the 23-year-old restaurant manager for further investigation.
Yesterday, the woman said that neither she nor her 41-year-old husband had anticipated any problems as there had been no customer complaints so far.
“I would have removed the wallpaper if it had been considered delicate,” she said, adding that she and her husband would cooperate fully with the police.
Currently, the restaurant owner is under Covid-19 quarantine.
There is another branch of the restaurant in Pulau Tikus.
The head of the State Criminal Investigations Department, SAC Rahimi Ra’ais, said similar wallpapers were removed at both outlets.
Police are investigating the motive for the communist-themed decorations.
The case is being investigated under Section 47 of the Companies
Propaganda Publication Act of
