Reddit reverses course on its Subreddit chat room feature

The other day, Reddit announced that they would introduce a new “Start Chat” feature for subreddits. Basically these are chat rooms that exist within subreddits, where small groups of users can meet and chat at the same time, thus saving the time of having to send direct messages or join a Discord server.

However, it seems that as fast as the feature was implemented, it has since been reversed. In a Reddit post, the company has announced that they will roll back the feature. It seems that the company’s eagerness to launch the feature has resulted in it being quite flawed, and it also appears that many subreddit moderators were not overly enthusiastic about it.

This is because chat rooms are not fully moderated. As some have pointed out this leaves the feature open to abuse and trolls who might be searching Reddit for open chat rooms to harass other users. This is important as there are some subreddits that host vulnerable communities that might not appreciate trolls coming to harass their users.

The feature is not canceled entirely, but will be re-evaluated by Reddit and made some changes. In a statement provided to The Verge, a spokesperson said: “Given the issues and concerns expressed by our users and moderators during the past 24 hours, we have made the decision to disable Start Chat so that we can reevaluate our deployment plan and develop the product to meet the needs of our community.”
