Recoveries exceed new Covid-19 cases, 2 deaths reported

PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health has reported 1,109 cases of Covid-19 and two deaths in the last 24 hours.

Chief Health Officer Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 1,148 recoveries, bringing the total number of discharged to 50,204.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the 1,109 cases bring the total number of infections in the country to 61,861.

Meanwhile, the two deaths bring the balance to 350.

A total of 11,307 people remain in treatment, 113 in intensive care and 41 require respiratory assistance.

Noor Hisham said Sabah again recorded the highest number of cases at 441, or 39.8% of all cases. Most of the cases (249) were close contacts, 97 were from existing groups, and 95 were from other Covid-19 screening tests.

Noor Hisham also said there were 25 group cases involving prisons and temporary detention centers.

Selangor recorded the second highest number of cases again today with 175, with the majority (99) from groups. Meanwhile, 47 cases were close contacts.

Negeri Sembilan reported 167 cases, Kuala Lumpur 154, Penang 64, and Perak 42.

Johor reported 33 cases in the last 24 hours, Kedah 25, Kelantan five and Pahang three.

Commenting on the Covid-19 vaccine that will be delivered in stages next year, Noor Hisham said the most important step was ensuring that the vaccine is safely registered under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA). ).

He said the government would also study the logistics of bringing the vaccine to the country, where priority would be given to those on the front lines and those from high-risk groups.

Following this, he said the ministry would carry out regular checks on who had received the vaccines, to record any side effects and ensure that the country could finally achieve herd immunity.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the government had signed an agreement with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer on November 24 to purchase 12.8 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

One million doses would be administered in the first quarter of next year, followed by 1.7 million, 5.8 million and 4.3 million doses in the second, third and fourth quarters of 2021, respectively.

They are expected to immunize a total of 6.4 million people in the country.
