PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health has reported 1,054 cases of Covid-19 and a record of 12 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 875 recoveries, bringing the total number of discharged to 23,995.

At a press conference, Noor Hisham said the 1,054 new cases bring the total number of infections in the country to 34,393.

The 12 deaths bring the balance to 263.

The 12 deaths were all from Sabah, comprising eight Malaysians and four foreigners, ranging in age from 14 to 82 years. Eight of them had a history of chronic diseases.

Noor Hisham said there are now 10,135 active cases in the country, of which 94 are receiving intensive care, of which 32 require respiratory assistance.

The imported cases are 14, made up of people who arrived from South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Uzbekistan, China, Hong Kong, Nepal, the United Kingdom and the Maldives.

Seven of the 1,040 locally transmitted cases today came from people returning home from Sabah, bringing the total number of cases with a history of travel to Sabah from September 20 to 478.

Sabah again registered the highest number of cases with 678 infections, representing 64.3% of all cases, followed by 150 cases from the Klang Valley. Meanwhile, Labuan reported 81 new cases.

Labuan, Selangor, Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and Sabah, all of which are under the conditional movement control order (CMCO), contributed a total of 909 cases or 86.2% of the total number of cases.

Noor Hisham said the increase was due to the increased number of exams conducted in these areas currently under the CMCO.

It added that 310, or 29.4% of all cases, were from prison groups and temporary detention centers, of which the Rumah Merah group from Sabah registered 229 cases, or 73.9%.

Most of the Sabah, Selangor, and Labuan cases came from existing clusters, while positive cases were also detected in close-contact Covid-19 screenings and other types of tests as well.

Meanwhile, Negeri Sembilan recorded 71 cases, while Penang had 35.

Of these figures, most of the cases came from existing clusters as well as new clusters, namely Cergas in Negeri Sembilan and Permatang in Penang.

Meanwhile, Sarawak recorded 21 cases, Kedah 12, and Kuala Lumpur reported 10.

Putrajaya, Perak, Johor, Melaka and Terengganu registered three or fewer cases each.
