PUTRAJAYA (Bernama): A paint manufacturing and sales factory in the Rawang Nautical Industrial Park, Selangor, is suspected of dumping prohibited effluents into a wastewater treatment plant owned by Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK).
According to the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), they received a complaint from IWK about the release of the prohibited effluent on Sunday (January 17) and then carried out a surprise inspection of the plant.
The factory was suspected of illegally dumping effluents, i.e. red paint manufacturing wastewater into the public sewer system which then flowed to the IWK-owned Wastewater Treatment Plant / Pumping Station (GBK 281) in the Rawang Nautical Industrial Park, Selangor.
“This irresponsible act can be detected early and does not involve any contamination of the water resources that will cause the interruption of work at the water treatment plant,” SPAN said in a statement today.
The commission said the inspection was conducted today by SPAN, together with the Police, the Department of Environment, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Selangor Water Management Board, the Selayang City Council and the IWK.
SPAN will take strong action without engaging any party suspected of releasing any prohibited effluent into the public sewer that will have an impact on the public wastewater treatment system, as well as the environment.
The act of releasing or removing any prohibited effluent into the public sewer system will be investigated under Section 61 (1) of the Water Utilities Industry Act of 2006. [Act 655] that being found guilty may result in a fine not to exceed RM100,000 or imprisonment for a period not to exceed one year or both.
SPAN seeks the cooperation of the public in reporting cases of contamination to SPAN’s Investigation and Compliance Division at 03-8317 9333 or by email at [email protected]. – Bernama
