Commentators on the global Premier League news broadcast and Sky Sports reported that Jiménez was taken directly to the hospital after eight minutes of treatment in the field by a team of doctors.

After the match, Wolves tweeted that Jiménez was undergoing a scan for a head injury at a London hospital and that the club would continue to provide more information as soon as it became available.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santos said after the game: “Raúl Jiménez is doing a scan now. He is conscious. He is well within the seriousness of the problem.”

“You start to hear the code red. It’s serious. It was a bad time for everyone. You see panic in their [medical staff] eyes and you start to think like this

“He speaks, he is aware. We have to make a proper assessment. He is in good hands.”

Jimenez, 29, was defending a corner when he collided with Brazilian international Luiz while trying to clear the ball at the near post.

Both players immediately fell to the ground, and worried teammates called for medical personnel to rush to the field to treat the two players.

And although Luiz was able to continue after a bandage was applied to cut off his head, a team of doctors placed Jiménez on a stretcher and wheeled him across the field.

Luiz was replaced at halftime by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Jiménez also appeared to be getting oxygen when they pulled him off the court and up the tunnel at the Emirates. He was replaced by Fabio Silva, the club’s record signing of £ 35 million from Porto this summer.

After the game, Wolves captain Conor Coady said: “We were enormously concerned when it happened. We knew right away that it was a horrible head butt.

“But we just hope and pray that everything is okay. I was in the front, right behind him when it happened.

“The most important thing is that both players are fine. But now he is with the right people and that is the most important thing. He is in the hospital and by all accounts he is awake and breathing.”

The selection of Mexico tweeted a message of support for Jiménez, saying to stay strong against one of the best international players in the country.

Arsenal’s Joe Willock offered Jimenez the team’s best wishes, while also providing an update on Luiz after the match.

“On behalf of the club and myself, we extend a cordial greeting to Raúl Jiménez. We hope he makes a good recovery. It was a bad incident.

“David Luiz has recovered well. He looked good when I saw him in the locker room.”

Wolves went on to win the game 2-1 with goals from Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence.
