MARCUS RASHFORD is an inspiration to the nation’s youth, we all know
that for now.
And not least for his Manchester United teammate Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood refers to the 22-year-old great statesman as his hero.
But how United achieved a resounding victory over the leaders of the Bundesliga
– the kind that would have reverberated across Europe – Greenwood directed
the way for Rashford to score an 18-minute hat-trick as a substitute.
It was Greenwood, 19, who had been sent home in disgrace.
of England duty last month, which began defeat with the benefit of
a call to the VAR of fag paper.
And when Rashford replaced Greenwood shortly after time, he ignored
a wrong offside flag to benefit from another VAR call set to
the first of his own rapid-fire double.
Rashford’s disinterest is well documented in his campaign against
hunger and child poverty.
He showed the same quality on the field when he gave up the opportunity to
complete a hat-trick from the penalty spot, allowing Anthony Martial
to United’s fourth net.
But then he secured the match ball anyway with a hard-hitting finish in
extra time.
What a magnificent night this was for United. Perhaps the best result
of Solskjaer’s reign – given the breadth of the scoreboard, even better
than his two famous away victories over Paris St Germain.
Forget the stories of these two clubs: United 20 times champion of
England, Leipzig formed a year after United won their biggest
recent European Cup.
Because the German club, top of the Bundeslia and the Champions League
semifinalists in the last legislature, they came to this party looking more
Established and accomplished team.
However, United absorbed a lot of pressure and, in a homeless era
advantage, they were able to play as a visiting team, which suits them
breaking with the beat, ending with dead-eyed efficiency.
This ‘group of death’ had seemed much less fatal after the last
victory of the week over PSG.
Still, being grouped with two of last season’s semi-finalists seemed like a
difficult question for United, who have not reached the Champions League
the last four in nine seasons now.
However, United has done it lightly.
Solskjaer made five changes to the Chelsea side on Saturday
– Bruno Fernandes and Rashford surprise admissions, with the
United boss blaming fixture congestion.
Rashford didn’t look tired when he got his chance.
Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann didn’t need his extraordinary
tailoring to be noticed: At just 33 years old, he has long been touted as
a potential future director of the most illustrious clubs in Europe.
However, the scoundrel sports jacket man soon saw his side pushed back
by a United pressure spell – Fred’s deflected shot pushed around
Peter Gulacsi’s publication.
And it was Pogba and Greenwood’s restored pairing that earned him
United’s advance in the 21st minute, even if VAR was apparently caught
nap.
Fred gained possession and fed Pogba, who came forward and expertly
hefted a pass for Greenwood to land a left foot shot for the first time
inside the far pole.
Replays suggested Greenwood was out of the game for a toenail or something, even
United’s coaching staff seemed to think so.
But the VAR, apparently more forgiving than the Premier League version,
It gave the attacker the good old-fashioned benefit of the doubt.
David De Gea soon had to turn down a powerful effort from Christopher
Nkunku with Leipzig looking confident and resourceful in attack.
If the Germans enjoyed great intentional possession, then the
Most special moments belonged to United.
Early in the second half, Pogba produced another peach pass for
release Anthony Martial, who blew half a chance.
Then Greenwood pulled out a pair of crooked-legged step-overs from his
party bag and saw a ripped shot pushed by Gulacsi.
Ibrahima Konate escaped with a handball while being punished – the VAR
officer a bleeding-hearted liberal once more, as possessed by our own
hang the judges from Stockley Park.
Donny Van de Beek enjoyed some eye-catching moments while earning his
United’s first start in an A-list match, including a tangle with
Marcel Halstenberg who brought a good cry from the penalty.
Shortly after the hour, Greenwood gave way to Rashford, last week
plasterer of Paris.
After De Gea was called into action at point blank range to shove a Konate
header, Rashford came to the fore.
Again the VAR favored United, Rashford was inches from his own half
when fellow sub Fernandes released him and ignored an early,
Wrong offside flag to advance and score with supreme coolness.
Rashford’s second came courtesy of an excellent input from Fred,
which became a pass, allowing the English forward to finish off with
savor.
And when Marcel Sabitzer turned Martial around, Rashford allowed
The Frenchman his first goal of the season from the penalty spot.
Then came the emphatic finale and the completion of Rashford’s treble.
They believe you cannot be a contender for BBC Sports Personality of the
Year because he has not achieved enough in the field.
Are they kidding?
